Nanda Devi Raj Yatra In Chamoli

Nanda Devi Raj Yatra is a very old traditioinal pilgirmage in vogue since the reign of Shalipal, a ninth century monarch. King Shalipal initiated a tradition that a big Pilgrimage would be reorganized every twelfth year to escort nandadevi to her in- Law’s place, near nanda Ghungti peak.

The trek is about 280 kms and takes about 18 days to complete.
The golden image of Nandadevi is carried in a silver palanquin called “Nandadevi - Ka dola” Along wit the canopies brought by the Kunwar and is followed by thousands of devotees in a long procession

Satopanth Lake In Chamoli

This triangular lake of serene water has a perimeter of about half a kilometer. Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar, the Hindu trinity is believed to occupy one corner each, and which are named after them. This is a simple place as there is no place to eat and also not a single place for rest, except caves. Cooked food, stove etc. have to be carried from Badrinath itself.

If the sky is clear one can see Bedni Bugyal. Bedri Bugyal is a camping spot. There is a huge grazing ground for mules, horses and sheeps. There are two temples and a small lake that add to the beauty of this place. One can see a lot of Himalayan peaks from Bedni Bugyal. Trekkers then go upto Bhaguwabasa which is 10-11 kms from Bedni Bugyal.

Shiv Temple In Chamoli

The temple is topped by a dome and twenty four doors lead to the sanctum sanctorum which is 30 sq.ft. in area. There are several broken idols around the temple which support the theory that in ancient times there were several more temples in Gopeshwar. A gleaming trident, made of eight different metals, dating back to the 12 century, bears inscription attributed to Anek Malla, king of Nepal, who reigned in the 13th Century. It is believed that while brute force cannot move his trident, the slightest touch by a true devotee can cause a tremor in it.

History of Chamoli

The region covered by the district of Chamoli forms part of the district of Pauri garhwal of the Kumaon till 1960. It occupies the north-eastern corner of the Garhwal tract and lies in the central or mid-Himalayas in the very heart of the snowy range described in ancient books as Bahirgiri, one of the three divisions of the Himalayan Mountains. Since 1839 it was part of the Pauri district. Earlier it was a part of the Almora district from 1816 to 1839. The sources of its history have been ancient literature especially Skandha Puran and Mahabharata, folk legends, folk sayings, traditional beliefs, work of historians- Medhakar Shastri, Mola Ram, Rai Bahadur, Pati Ram, Pt. Harikrishna Raturi, Atkinson, Walton, Rahul Shankrityayan, Dr. Shib Prasad Dabral and Surbir Singh.

Till 1512 AD many parts of Chamoli have been the capital cities of many feudal kings of Uttrankhand and Garhwal. In the year 888 AD king Bhanu Pratap of Chandpur Garh gave away his kingdom to king Kanak Pal of Dhar Maluwa. In the year 1500 king Ajay Pal of Chandpur Garh won many Garhs (Princely States) and named the integrated kingdom “Garhwal”. In the year 1512 AD he shifted his capital to Dewalgarh and after five years in 1517 to Srinagar Garhwal.
Chamoli was named after the name of “Chandramoleshwar” Mahadev Temple.

It is believe that Ved Vyas composed his immortal epic, the Mahabharata here. This land has inspired the imagination of great poets like Kalidas.
